Scalable Agile Project Management Methods for Your Next Project

It’s no secret that designing, implementing, and launching a new technology solution can be a complex and risky undertaking. At Solü Technology Partners we believe that a well-run project can be the difference between an epic failure and a blockbuster success. That’s where properly applied Agile principles and Agile project management techniques come in.

Solü Technology Partners uses Agile project management methodologies to successfully deliver all types of projects. We continuously evolve our Agile methodologies based on modern best practices and real-world experience and tailor our approach to every client engagement to ensure a successful outcome.

What is Agile Project Management?

Agile project management is an iterative approach to managing the design and implementation of technical and non-technical projects. It is often used with software development projects which benefit from a high degree of flexibility and collaboration.

Agile project management maximizes efficiency and quality through the use of consistent, lightweight progress demonstrations and process improvement activities. It emphasizes iterative, short, fixed-duration activities for planning, analysis, design, development, test, and review. An agile project team owns all aspects of the solution, including ensuring that the completed solution meets both end-user and business needs.

Although there are numerous agile delivery methods out there, it is our experience that the Scrum Method is best-suited for application development, while the Kanban Method is well-suited for business-as-usual requests including issue resolution.

Some of the benefits commonly associated with the use of Agile project management methods include:

Greater Overall Productivity
Higher Quality Deliverables
Shorter Time to Market
Increased Customer and End-User Satisfaction
Sustainable and Consistent Results
Improved Teamwork and Increased Team Member Satisfaction

The Scrum Method

Scrum was first developed in the 1990’s by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland to address the shortcomings of waterfall project management methods in the delivery of software projects.

A major goal of Scrum was to deliver high-quality deliverables in weeks, rather than months or years. The Scrum Method helps teams achieve this goal through an approach rooted in empirical process control which focuses on transparency, inspection, and adaptation.

At Solü, we have found that Scrum is ideal for projects that are complex, have a high degree of uncertainty, or require significant research and innovation.

The core of Scrum is the Sprint. Sprints are time-boxed iterations of one month or less during which a team completes project deliverables that are release-ready. Over the course of a project, every sprint has the same duration and consists of a standard set of meetings, typically called ceremonies.

  • Sprint
  • Sprint Planning
  • Backlog Grooming
  • Daily Standup
  • Sprint Review (demonstration of deliverables)
  • Sprint Retrospective (lessons learned)

The Kanban Method

At Solü, we prefer to use Kanban for production support or business-as-usual activities that are typically repetitive or have frequently changing priorities.

Based on lean manufacturing methods developed by Toyota in the 1950’s, the Kanban Method focuses on visualizing workflow to improve operational efficiency and reduce work-in-progress duration. This method of agile delivery uses a simple visual representation of deliverables and their status.
