Celebrating the diverse roles, experiences, and perspectives that women bring to technology

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re excited to amplify our team members’ voices! The National Women’s History Alliance announced this year’s theme as “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.” Says NWHA, “Women are at the forefront of driving holistic change. Their leadership is not only addressing today’s most urgent challenges – it is laying the foundation for a more resilient and inclusive tomorrow.”

In this blog series, women on our team will share their journey to the technology field, the skills that have been most valuable to them, their advice to women considering a career in tech and more.

From solution leads to co-ops, these women will provide their diverse perspectives about what it means to be a woman in technology!

In this feature, get to know three of our scrum masters – Denise, Emilia, and Miriam.

What inspired you to pursue a career in technology/ software engineering?

Honestly, I took a computer class in high school and hated it! But the reason I hated it was because it was too slow for me and I was bored but it did spark an interest in the fact that I was fairly decent at it quickly (although it was just the basics). This led me to dig into it deeper and see what else was out there that I could explore. As I dug in more and more, I realized that it was truly the way of the future and I wanted to be a part of that!

What skill (technical or non-technical) has been most valuable in your career so far?

Communication – There are many facets to any technical work and many individuals involved. If information isn’t clear, isn’t understood or isn’t communicated, nothing else will be successful.

How has Solü’s company culture supported your growth and development?

Solü’s culture is amazing! I have never felt so supported by my teammates in my entire career. I have had smaller groups within other companies that were very supportive but the Solü team members are all very supportive of each other, individually and as a whole. This support has allowed me to grow and be able to be me in all aspects of my career.

What advice would you give to women considering a career in tech?

Build a strong network, take on that challenge with confidence (whether presented to you or better yet, seek it out), advocate for yourself, and embrace opportunities.

What inspired you to pursue a career in technology/ software engineering?

My transition into technology was a natural extension of my experience in education. As a former educator, I was constantly coordinating people, solving problems, and creating environments where others could do their best work. I became interested in how technology teams build and deliver solutions that impact so many people, and the Scrum Master role felt like the perfect intersection of collaboration, structure, and continuous improvement.

What skill (technical or non-technical) has been most valuable in your career so far?

Adaptability has been one of the most valuable skills in my career. Pivoting from education into tech required a willingness to learn quickly, embrace challenges, and remain open to growth. The tech industry evolves rapidly, and being able to adjust to constant changes and continuously ask thoughtful questions has allowed me to contribute effectively while expanding my own capabilities.

How has Solü’s company culture supported your growth and development?

Solü’s culture truly lives up to its value of being “Passionate about our People.” From the beginning, I’ve felt supported in taking on meaningful challenges that encourage both personal and professional growth. The work environment feels less like a traditional workplace and more like a community that genuinely cares about each other’s success. The sense of support and encouragement has made it easier to step out of my comfort zone, continue learning, and grow confidently in my career.

What advice would you give to women considering a career in tech?

Don’t let the idea that you need a traditional technical background hold you back. Many of the skills that women bring from other fields – communication, organization, problem-solving, and empathy – are incredibly valuable in tech. Be curious, stay open to learning, and ask questions! Technology needs and thrives on diverse perspectives, and your unique background can be a powerful asset.

What inspired you to pursue a career in technology/ software engineering?

In the early days of my career, technology wasn’t even on my radar. My journey into the tech world was more of a lucky detour than a planned destination. While working for a cell phone provider, I realized that the one department I hadn’t explored was the software development group. I approached the Software Development Director to inquire if there might be room for someone like me, someone who lacked a technical background but had strong knowledge of the business, to join the team. A few months later, he made sure to suggest I check out the internal job board by week’s end. To my surprise, an opening had just been posted for a business analyst/junior developer role. I seized the opportunity, diving headfirst into learning everything I could, from our custom reporting tool to C language, data modeling, and SQL querying. I embraced every chance to expand my knowledge. Within three years, I was leading the reporting team as its supervisor. What appealed to me was the logical process and the unique blend of skills each team member brought to problem-solving. The collaborative dynamics of software development teams were a refreshing change from the more solitary roles of customer service, collections, sales, or accounting.

What skill (technical or non-technical) has been most valuable in your career so far?

Throughout my career, communication has undoubtedly been my most invaluable skill. I’ve come to understand that effective communication is not a one-way street; it requires active listening, keen awareness of your audience, and a genuine understanding of their motivations. This approach has been the cornerstone of building collaborative relationships and fostering trust. Establishing trust is vital; it enhances your credibility and makes navigating challenging conversations a smoother process. By prioritizing clear and empathetic communication, I’ve been able to create environments where ideas are shared freely, and solutions are crafted collaboratively.

How has Solü’s company culture supported your growth and development?

Over the years, Solü has consistently demonstrated that they value not just my professional contributions, but me as an individual. I’ve greatly benefited from constructive feedback, which has supported my growth and success within the organization. When I transitioned from traditional Project Management to Agile, they backed me, confident in my ability to dive in wholeheartedly and learn swiftly. I’ve often been asked to assist with projects beyond my usual responsibilities, knowing that I am willing to embrace new challenges while maintaining my current workload. Beyond career support, the importance they place on work-life balance has been invaluable, allowing me the space to harmonize my professional duties with family commitments. Their approach fosters loyalty, and I genuinely enjoy being part of this supportive environment.

What advice would you give to women considering a career in tech?

Believe in your abilities and boldly express that confidence. Those around you will take cues from how you perceive yourself, so ensure that your self-regard conveys the respect and value you wish others to extend to you.

Don’t wait for opportunities to be handed to you – seek them out actively. While you won’t secure every chance, you’ll certainly gain more than if you hadn’t pursued them, and people will remember your eagerness and motivation.

Prioritize developing your communication skills; it’s a lifelong endeavor that will yield continuous rewards not only in your career but in your personal life as well.
